SBE was recently successful in winning the national Broome Sustainable
Housing Competition, run by the West Australian Department of Housing
and Works. Announced at the beginning of December 2002, the competition
attracted a wide range of entries from around the country. SBE looks forward
to documenting, constructing and monitoring the design’s environmental
and energy usage performance in conjunction with the West Australian Government.
The design for a sustainable public housing prototype, appropriate for
north-western Australia, was dominated by an appropriate climatic response,
realistic costing within a public housing budget and the efficient use
of resources. The house intertwines covered, semi-enclosed decks and room
spaces. It utilises a prefabricated, thermally responsive pavillion construction.
Set 1.5 metres above the ground, it maximises cooling sea-breeze cross-ventilation,
while affording protection and allowing control of other winds.
The design includes solar hot water, photovoltaic and rainwater systems.
To maintain the internal temperatures required by the brief, it includes
two super-insulated “cool cells” that allow for super efficient
zoned air-conditioning..
